La Crosse Technology BC-700 Alpha Power Battery Charger
Best charger I owned! Brought back to life "dead" batteries that other charges gave up. Recommended it to friends at work and they are happy too with this charger. I use it regularly to recharge AA and AAA cells from various manufacturers. I use discharge/charge mode and charge/test mode often. Left the charger on overnight and it doesn't overheat or fry batteries. It changes to trickle charge as soon as charging is completed. Love it!
Great except for the plug
This is the best charger I have owned the display is excellent you can see if your batteries are charging to capacity or not, it charges the batteries fairly slowly which as other reviewers have pointed out, is a good thing as it reduces the amount of heat generated, thereby increasing the life of the batteries.
I only have one gripe about this product, the picture shows a nice compact looking charger, what they don't show is the bulky power plug which contains the transformer.
I wish they would incorporate the transformer in the charger itself, the bulky plug means it is awkward to find a place to plug it in. It wont fit in the average 6 way properly as the bulky part of the plug will cover up the neighboring sockets, and if used in the upper outlet of a double wall socket it will cover up the lower one.
I have owned other products with this "transformer in the plug" arrangement and I have never liked it.
I can see the point of it in an item which can be battery operated like for instance a laptop computer, as if the transformer is in the power plug you gain a lighter and smaller, more portable product while using it on battery power, but I dont see the point of this in a charger that must be used on mains power all the time.
I would much rather the transformer be built into the charger to save space around my already over crowded power outlets.
Battery reviver
This thing has almost paid for itself already and made rechargeables highly valuable again. I have a dozen or so old NiMh batteries that would not last long on a charge.
I put them in this and used refresh mode and all but two were restored to near-original capacity. It takes a few days, but refresh mode is worth it.
I was having to change out the batteries from my wireless mouse and xbox 360 controller every other day, now it's been a few weeks and the controller batteries are still 3/4 full.
The only problem I have with it is there's a 8 second time limit to choose the mode after you put in a battery, Just seems like an odd design, but it still works great!
The BEST AA recharging unit out there!
An earlier reviewer mentioned that this will "only" charge up to a rate of 700Ma. For those of you who might be uninformed about "rapid" charging units, 700 Milliamp rate is more than adequate, unless you need your batteries immediately, if not sooner!! I charge my Eneloop batteries at a rate of ONLY 200 ma. Yes, it does take over 10 hours at times (when the batteries are near totally depleated), but your batteries will last more than twice as long (before throwing them away) if you charge at the lowest rate possible!! Really quick charging rates are good in their place, but if you use rechargable batteries on a nearly daily basis like I do, using a high recharging rate will make your batteries VERY hot, thus damaging them much sooner! My solution? I have 16 AA Eneloop rechargable batteries and TWO Nikon EN-El3e camera batteries that I use for my big photo trips (going to Italy next week for 9 days). My Nikon D700 takes one Nikon EN-EL3E battery inside the camera and 8 AA batteries for the MB-D10 battert pack/grip attached to the bottom of the camera. Since I shoot in full adobe RGB mode with 14 bit raw uncompressed color format, my setup uses a fair amount of battery power! When "in the field" I carry one spare EN-EL3e battery and 8 spare Eneloop AA batteries. Most of the time the FRESHLY recharged batteries in the grip and camera body will carry me through an entire day of shooting, but not always (that's why I carry spares!). When I get back to my hotel room, I IMMEDIATELY place my used batteries on the two battery chargers (including the one specifically for my Nikon battery). So when I go out the next day, I'm "loaded for bear" again! My Nikon SB900 flash also takes 4 additional batteries, when I bring it (I will this trip!). I think this is the finest charger out there for thos who don't want to have to replace their rechargable batteries every year! I LOVE the features! You won't go wrong with this charger!!
Best of breed
Easily the best charger I've ever owned, I can't recommend it enough. I now use it exclusively for every rechargeable battery we own.
